From the path on the Canadian site, the Niagra Falls are pretty, but far away. It’s nice to watch, but what’s the big deal? It all changes when you go down to the river and get on the Maid of the Mist, put on your blue trashbag poncho, and go chugging along, past the American Falls, and into the loop of the Horseshoe Falls. The sound is a roar and the wind — churned up by the falling water and rising mist — is unexpected. It makes up for the cheesiness of the town and reminds you that it’s not nice to fool with Mother Nature.
